The Starship Enterprise had tribbles, and we have twitters. In the original Star Trek, tribbles were similar to Gizmo from the Gremlins, furry, adorable, and reproduced in the same rapid and anomalous manner. The adorable puffs soon became arduous to manage. Enter Twitter.
The unremitting stream of information bestowed upon us by Twitter is quite comparable to the gremlins and tribbles, in the form of tweets. The popularity of blogging has hit the microscopic scale, and micro blogging is now filling every available crevice with tidbits of information and constant updates, leaving many feeling overwhelmed.
The popularity of Twitter has soared, attracting an extensive variety of users, from celebrities like Oprah Winfrey to businesses eager to connect with prospects on a more personal platform. Twitters numbers are astounding and impressive, during the month of April the site relished an 83% increase in traffic, drawing in an additional 17 million new users (according to ComScore).
Twitter will continue to evolve and improve, striving to attract new users while maintaining current user satisfaction to the best of their ability. Upwards of 60% of new Twitter newbies stop using it in their first month (according to Neilsen) a figure the company would like to improve. Twitter is aiming for roots and wings. It has been a difficult time as of late for many companies, Microsoft and Yahoo included. It is reported that the two online entities have resumed talks regarding a wide-ranging advertising partnership. Talks of an outright merger or sale of Yahoo’s search business to Microsoft have not resumed thus far.
Investors have long been chattering over the business possibilities between Microsoft and Yahoo. Market results Tuesday after close show that Yahoo’s troubles are not yet past, as they are down from a year ago. Ears are perked for further development details that could spell progress in the near future.
Investors have been honing in on various key points to form predictions, including a new round of potential layoffs, which are rumored to cut several hundred positions in addition to the 2,400 jobs cut last year. Another measure Yahoo has undertaken in attempts to recover is to attempt to sell some of its properties, including HotJobs.
Expected net revenue analysts expect Yahoo to report are approximately $1.2 billion, down from last year’s $1.35 billion. On the upside for online business, Google has enjoyed a 10 percent net revenue rise this year. It has become a pastime these days to watch where former Yahoo execs are ending up. With the new leadership of Carol Bartz as Chief Executive, Yahoo is in transition. During this transition, several ex-Yahoo execs are scoring important roles at rival companies, a surprising trend in the internet and online advertising industry.
The latest being Gregory Coleman, the former top sales executive at Yahoo who is now running Platform-A, AOL’s collection of online advertising technologies and services. Coleman’s new gig has a revolving door however, with predecessor Lynda Clarizio lasting less than a full fiscal year and Curt Viebranz before her lasting less than six months. AOL announced plans last week to lay off 10 percent of its workforce, advertising 700 people, due to the decrease in advertising.
Yahoo’s former top media exec Scott Moore landed a similar role with Microsoft. Another interesting twist is that Moore worked at Microsoft prior to Yahoo, and was replaced by Jeff Dossett-formerly of Microsoft. These are just two of the more recent cases; there have been plenty more in the past years. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Yahoo, as of late it is nearly impossible to track intentions, due to the fluid leadership roles the company is enduring. Row 44 is a company who makes technology that allows people to have internet and phone access on airplanes. As early as this month, Southwest and Alaska Airlines are scheduled to begin testing a handful of aircraft using the Row 44 technology. If things proceed as planned, the North American customers of those airlines could be surfing, searching and emailing in the air in as little as 18 months. Row 44 aims to transform travel downtime in the air into revenue. Estimated cost of the service is tentatively set to be $6 for handheld devices and $8 for laptops for passengers of domestic flights.
In efforts to showcase the technology to potential investors and media Row 44 flew a test plane to Las Vegas, a 1950s era Grumman former seaplane with blue wings and a yellow tail. The company utilizes satellites for the technology, while competitor Aircell uses cellular towers. Aircell is working with Virgin America and American Airlines in trials that have begun recently.

Google is the master of forging exclusive relationships. Google courted us with search, and eventually we began to accept our invitations to Gmail-sending invites to our friends who in turn sent them to their friends.
Now factor in the scads of us who have implemented and adore the Google calendar. The Google calendar provides scheduling capabilities at their finest, with the ability to share information inside and outside of the office. But wait, it gets better-the Google calendar and email linked up and began communicating with each other! So who wouldn’t want that incoming email about an event added to their calendar automatically? Yes please.
Then Google incorporated its instant messenger within Gmail. Right there in your inbox is your buddy list, a search box, Google Maps and any other Google tool you could possibly need to make it through your day unscathed-and easy. Did I mention you can now chat with your friends via video with your Gmail chat? Still not impressed? It works flawlessly, even between a Mac and a PC.
MapQuest was the go-to online map source-then Google Maps was born. As Google Maps provides novel features regularly, it just seems silly to use anything else. From RSS feeds to subway directions, Google is innovation and it is a part of us. Brought to you by Deep Blue Interactive, your Fort Lauderdale interactive marketing and web design firm.
